This course provides learners with a practical and theoretical introduction to early years education and child development, aligning with the CACHE standards for entry-level training. It begins with an overview of the role of an early years practitioner, focusing on key responsibilities, professional behaviour, and the importance of teamwork and communication in childcare settings. Learners also develop an understanding of reflective practice and the value of ongoing professional development.

In the child development modules, learners explore the stages of physical, emotional, and cognitive growth from birth to age five. They will engage with major theories from Piaget and Vygotsky, learn how to observe children effectively, and understand how to support each child’s unique developmental needs. These insights lay the groundwork for planning age-appropriate learning and play activities.

The course places strong emphasis on safeguarding and child welfare. Students learn how to identify signs of abuse or neglect, follow appropriate reporting procedures, and maintain safe environments for children. Emotional wellbeing, resilience-building, and inclusive practices are integrated throughout to ensure a child-centred approach.

Learners also examine how to build positive relationships with families, understand cultural diversity, and communicate observations with parents and carers.
